Sneak Peek at the New York City Auto Show: Don’t Miss These Highlights

It’s that time of year again, when the New York City Auto Show rolls into Manhattan. The show is an opportunity for auto manufacturers to display their most exciting innovations, groundbreaking concept cars and new vehicles that are bound to be a hit in the coming years. And it’s a chance for car lovers to get up close and personal with all of it.

Before you go, check out this list of what to look out for at this year’s auto show. It’s a real look into the future on the road.

1. Electricity’s in the air

Or at least in the cars!

Electric cars are front and center in this year’s exhibition. Maybe 2019 will be the year we finally make fossil fuels, well, a fossil!

An award given by a panel of 86 international judges, meant to honor groundbreaking new vehicles. This all-electric SUV boasts 394hp and it can pounce from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, with a battery range of up to 294 miles. It swept the auto show awards, also pinning best green car and best design. Jaguar is currently at work developing an electric sedan to keep company with the I-Pace crossover.

Mercedes honors the past, charges up for the future.

Mercedes-Benz traces its origin to 1886, when Carl Benz filed a patent for a three-wheeled “vehicle powered by a gas origin.” Flash forward to 2019 and Mercedes-Benz rolls out the Edition EQC 1886. With 402hp and 564 pound-feet of torque, not to mention all the creature comforts you’d expect from a Mercedes, the EQC is poised to revolutionize the auto scene just like that 19th-century three-wheeler. It’s the first vehicle developed under the Mercedes-Benz EQ technology brand, so keep your eyes open for a whole family of high-class electric cars within the next few years.

Genesis made more than a few jaws drop at last year’s auto show with their retro-futuristic Essentia concept car. This year, the Genesis Mint is a sleek electric coupe with wild scissor-doors for the cargo area. The minimalist interior allows for maximum space in a small package. No word if it will ever hit production, but it’s a neat example of what the future of urban driving might look like.

2. Cars that look right back at you

The 2020 Subaru Outback offers a few new features, such as a 11.9-inch touchscreen and a brand-new suite of electronic driving aids. The most notable, however, must be its facial recognition system.

Not only has the new Subaru had a bit of a facelift, part of its “distraction mitigation system” uses an infrared camera and facial recognition technology to detect signs of driver fatigue, and warn the driver.

Maybe it’s not so flattering to have your car tell you, “Hey honey, you look tired,” but this futuristic driver aid might save lives.

3. Brands redefining themselves

Quite a few brands are trying on a new look at this year’s show.

Ford’s luxury brand Lincoln has been in a process of reinventing itself since the release of the Continental, and it continues with the Corsair. This replacement for the MKC is Lincoln’s smallest SUV and also its most dramatic in design, with a unique look and features to set it apart from others in the brand.

Porsche stretches the definition of a coupe with the Cayenne Coupe, a sportier and more stylish version of the existing Cayenne.

Toyota has finally warmed to the idea of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which will be fully compatible with the infotainment systems of the brand’s vehicles on display this year.

Meanwhile, Cadillac shows they’re still in the sedan game with the boldly styled CT5.

4. Is it the fastest road car in history?

Get ready for the first road car to hit 300mph: the Koenigsegg Jesko.

Powered by a 1,280hp V8 engine and torque at 1,500 Nm, if this Man o’ War of a car was any faster it would be blasting off into space!

5. Kia’s “one car for everything” concept car

Kia’s Habaniro, an all-electric compact crossover, promises a range of over 300 miles with Level 5 autonomous driving, meaning (if it ever hits the roads) it won’t need any input from the driver other than telling it where to go.

The Habaniro rolls together the versatility of an SUV with the practicality of a hatchback commuter car, plus the power of an off-road adventure vehicle. Maybe it’s got one foot on a few different boats, but this is part of Kia’s vision.

“We imagined a car for everyone and nearly everything,” explained Tom Kearns, vice president of design for Kia. It’s a concept car intended to be “comfortable navigating city streets, carving turns on a coastal road and off-roading with confidence to remote wilderness adventures.”

6. Heavy-duty pickups

A pickup truck already qualifies as fairly heavy duty, but Ram takes it to the next level this year with a new line of heavy-duty pickups, including a special Kentucky Derby edition with a choice of 6.7-liter Cummins diesel of 6.4-liter gasoline Hemi engine, plus options of a mega cab and dual rear wheels.

If you get your hands on one of these things (and there will be only 1,000 produced), you and your horses are going places for sure!

7. All the crazy sports cars you could dream of

Auto shows are great for getting a sneak peak of the year’s car market, but half the fun has to be ogling the wildest, fanciest and flashiest sports cars from top luxury brands.

A few highlights to feast your eyes on:

  • Porsche 991 Speedster, a sleek powerhouse with 502hp. Porsche will produce 1,948 to celebrate the brand’s 70th
  • Rimac Concept-Two, an all-electric supercar featuring certifiably insane performance specs such as 1,914hp, top speed of 256mph and 0-60 acceleration in 1.85 seconds, plus a 403-mile battery range.
  • Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. This special-edition Lamborghini is a lightweight sprinter that can reach 125mph in just 8.6 seconds. Only 900 of them will be built.
  • BAC Mono, for sure one of the most unique supercars out there, from its wasp-like design to its extraordinary high-speed handling.

Conclusion

I hope this whets your appetite for the show! It will run from April 18-28th at the Javits Center in Manhattan. But don’t worry if you’re not able to make it: next week we’ll feature an in-depth recap of the top cars and events.
